Research and Development of Next-Generation Marine Survey Technology

Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) is considered rich in important mineral resources that support a carbon-neutral society, such as seafloor hydrothermal deposits, rare-earth-rich mud, and cobalt-rich crusts. To discover these resources and evaluate their potential, JGI is pursuing the research and development of comprehensive survey technologies for both the seafloor and subseafloor, leveraging next-generation marine mobility systems (such as Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) and Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)). Meanwhile, we are pursuing research and development of deep-sea environmental monitoring technologies to ensure the sustainable development of marine resources.
